The PADI Open Water Diver course is open to all water enthusiasts who are ten years old or older. We offer two schedules for completing the academic and confined water (pool) requirements. You have choices of reading a student workbook (traditional) or reading online (ELearning). The beauty of the PADI educational programs is that you have options to suit your personal study needs.
Most Asked Question: Do we need to know how to swim?
The simple answer is YES.
You must be able to float/tread for 10 minutes and swim a continuous 200 yards (any stroke).
Class types include (We have 2 options):
Q: What is NOT included in the cost of the class? Your personal gear (mask, fins, snorkel and booties), rental gear ***see below to find out how to receive FREE RENTAL GEAR***.
Q: Where do I purchase my personal gear? We offer a full line of scuba gear for our students, we have everything we sell online and a small on had selection. Should there be a problem while in confined water, we can simply change out and continue learning. If you chose to order a complete scuba package we can help you get set up and order it so it is delivered for your check out dives.
Q: Cool, so tell me how do I receive FREE RENTAL GEAR!? As an additional incentive, students that purchase their personal gear from us will receive a voucher worth $120 for the rental of the scuba equipment for the open water weekend. This gear includes tank, weights, wetsuit, BCD, and regulator). Students not purchasing from us will pay the standard $120 rental fee.
Q: Can I purchase my gear online or at a sporting goods store? Buyer Beware! Believe it or not, one size does not fit all. Comfort, quality and fit are keys to your enjoyment and success in your class. Our retail staff is highly experienced at properly fitting new divers, and we offer a very broad selection at different price points to find the perfect fit for your body and budget. We will give you a personal, one-on-one fitting, and GUARANTEE your satisfaction. If any gear is not the right fit on the first night of class, we will find a solution, something online retailer will not do after gear is used.
Q: What if I already purchased my gear somewhere else? We hope you will take advantage of our personalized fittings and satisfaction guarantee, but if you already have gear, we just require that any gear not bought at International Scuba be brought in PRIOR TO the beginning of class for our retail team to check out to make sure it properly fits and is scuba quality gear. Your success is our upmost concern, and ill-fitting gear can hinder your success and enjoyment. There is a difference between snorkel quality gear and scuba quality gear.
Q: How many people will be in my class? We pride ourselves in providing a fun, family atmosphere and producing confident, successful new divers. In order to provide the BEST learning opportunity for you, our class size is limited to 6 students. By keeping our classes small, our instructors are able to dedicate more personal attention to each student and ensure your success and enjoyment in class.
Q: How soon do I need to sign up for class? Since our classes are limited to 6 students, they tend to fill up VERY QUICKLY. It is recommended that you sign up several weeks to a couple of months in advance of your desired class date in order to ensure you get your desired class.
Q: What happens if I sign up for class and get sick or have a family emergency and need to reschedule my class? Since there is such a high demand for our classes, it has become necessary to institute a very firm cancellation policy.
Q: What is the cancellation policy for classes? We understand that things come up and life happens, but if you need to cancel class within 2 weeks of your start day or do not show up for your class, you will be assessed a $75 rescheduling fee before you can reschedule.
Alternative schedules are available such as our Junior Camp (designed for divers ages 10-15 and offered several times a year) and our eLearning options (good for those who need certified in a hurry or can’t fit into the regularly scheduled classes).
Q: What is the Open Water Weekend? Your Open Water Weekend is a blast where you will do your “check out dives” and complete your certification. It consists of 4 dives in a real open water setting where you will demonstrate the skills you practiced and mastered in the pool.
Q: When is the Open Water Weekend? You are automatically enrolled in the open water weekend immediately following your class/pool sessions. Weather permitting.
Q: What if I can’t make the weekend following my class/pool? If you cannot make that weekend you will need to plan on attending the next scheduled class as long as there is space available. If you cannot wait for the next weekend and want to schedule a private check out dive you will need to pay an additional $200 for a private check out dive.
Q: Where are check out dives conducted? We conduct check out dive at Balmorhea State Park, which is a 2-hour drive from Midland. When they are closed we will travel to Santa Rosa, NM (Blue Hole) or Austin, TX (Windy Point) pending on water temp and weather.
Q: What is this PPB and Nitrox extra certification? Not satisfied with just getting the Open Water certification? Add to your diving repertoire with the Peak Performance Buoyancy (PPB) and Enriched Air classes, both of which can be completed in the same weekend as your Open Water dives! Open Water students receive a discount on the PPB course and a free Nitrox tank to dive with when you add these courses to your weekend dives. You save over $135 by doing these great specialties while you are already at your open water dive site.
We hear complements from our students on their first vacation dive that they didn’t look like “rookies”. The PPB course will fine tune your buoyancy, weighting, breathing, and kicking beyond the Open Water course. Nitrox allows divers longer bottom time which is what we are after!
